The League of Women Voters is turning 100 in 2020! LWVMA is making plans to celebrate the founding of the LWV and LWVMA and the passage of the “right to vote” 19th Amendment. LWVMA has established a 100th Anniversary Committee to make recommendations for a Fall 2019 educational event and a signature event in Spring 2020 and to develop other activities to promote the League and the important anniversaries throughout 2019-2020.
The 100th Anniversary Committee has formed three sub-committees to focus our work and is looking for volunteers for these sub-committees.
Local League Engagement: Provide a framework to share ideas and materials so every local League will celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the League and the ratification of the 19thAmendment. Through regular communication among Leagues, the committee will highlight tools, templates, and programs and encourage cross-League sharing and collaboration. Already have something planned? Let the 100th Anniversary Committee know so we can coordinate schedules and support your efforts.
Major Events: Plan for Fall 2019 and Spring 2020 major events. Both events will celebrate LWVMA’s achievements over the past 100 years and present our compelling vision for the next 100 years.
Civics Education: Develop toolkits and activities for student and community education about the passage of the 19th Amendment and the women who were part of that effort, as well as the ongoing fight to eliminate barriers to voting. Volunteers are needed to help develop fun and engaging activities for all ages to learn about the history and how to make a difference in the future.
Here’s what you can do to help. Contact 100thanniversary@lwvma.org.
- Join a subcommittee. We would love to have members representing all of Massachusetts. The committees meet via videoconference, so you do not need to travel to meetings.
- Send us your thoughts and ideas for activities the LWVMA or local Leagues might consider to celebrate the 100th Anniversary.
- Let us know what your League has planned. The Committee plans to set up a way to share these events and ideas with other Leagues.
We look forward to working with you to make the 100th Anniversary Celebration of the LWVMA and the passage of the 19th Amendment an exciting and informative year. Committee co-chairs are Donna Hooper and Judy Zaunbrecher; members are Mary Ann Ashton, Robin Chen, Scotti Finnegan, Michelle Kweder, Karen Price, Courtney Rau Rogers and Florence Seldin.
