April 2024 Scharfman Grants Awarded to Seven Leagues

LWV Lexington:  The Lexington League received a grant for an evening event featuring Henry Grabar, author of the recent book, Paved Paradise: How Parking Explains the World. The event is in collaboration with the Lexington Town Transportation Coordinator. 

LWV South Coast: The South Coast League received a grant to plan a program regarding the sinister outcomes that disinformation is causing in the current political climate. Daniela Melo will be their speaker. Melo is a faculty member at BU and contributes to New Bedford Light (New Bedford’s online newspaper). 

LWV Northampton Area: The LWV Northampton Area received a grant to subsidize the cost of printing 50 two-sided weatherproof, reusable voter/election information yard signs to display in high-visibility locations throughout their chapter’s diverse geographic area (Northampton, Holyoke, Easthampton, Springfield, and environs) during each election season. One side of the sign will include the Vote411 website as a voter information resource, and the other will list bulleted reasons why voting matters.

LWV Franklin County: The LWV Franklin County received a grant to support two voter outreach projects. First, LWVFC will march in the Franklin County Pride Day parade, and provide a voter registration and information table at the event. They will give away rainbow-themed pens with the LWVFC name. Second, they hold an annual Civics Trivia Night at the local Elk’s Club which has become a popular event. They are recruiting teams from local schools and other groups, and are looking to expand their visibility and engagement in the community.

LWV Dover/Sherborn: The LWV Dover/Sherborn received a grant to print voter guides that will cover the contested seats on the Sherborn Town Departments at the local level. They plan to provide a brief narrative on eight candidates for the three contested seats. 

LWV Sharon/Stoughton: The League of Women Voters of Sharon-Stoughton received a grant to provide a bag of voting material and goodies to Southeastern High School students on or near their 18th birthday with the goal to encourage them to register to vote in the 2024 presidential election

LWV Arlington: The LWV Arlington received a grant to update “Arlington Votes” signs created in August 2022, with stickers added for new dates applicable to the March 5, 2024 State Primary and April 6, 2024 local elections.
