Contact Your Legislators to Support the Safe Communities Act

The Joint Committee on Public Safety and Homeland Security must decide by May 8 whether to advance the Safe Communities Act (H.2288/S.1510) this session. That’s less than 10 days away.

Current state and local involvement in federal immigration law enforcement discourages immigrants from seeking police and court protection when they need it. Victims of domestic violence, wage theft, and unsafe working conditions are reluctant to come forward, afraid that seeking help will result in deportation and family separation.

The Safe Communities Act would end voluntary police and court involvement in federal immigration law enforcement. As a result, everyone in Massachusetts could report crimes and seek help, protection, and medical care without fear of deportation. Read LWVMA testimony for the Safe Communities Act here. Here’s how you can help:

Please send an email TODAY to your own legislators**using the sample script below, and ask them to urge members of the Joint Committee on Public Safety and Homeland Security to report the bill out of committee favorably by the May 8 deadline.

Dear Rep.______/Sen.______

As a member of the League of Women Voters, I believe it is critical that everyone in Massachusetts can seek help, protection, and medical care for themselves and their children, regardless of immigration status.

The Safe Communities Act (S.1510 /H.2218) would end voluntary police and court involvement in federal immigration enforcement, thus enabling everyone to report crimes such as domestic violence, wage theft, and unsafe working conditions, without fear of immigration consequences. This bill would help build trust within communities, and it enjoys strong support from public safety officials across the state.

Therefore, I urge you to support the Safe Communities Act by encouraging the members of the Joint Committee on Public Safety and Homeland Security to give the bill a favorable report by the May 8 deadline.

Sincerely,
