Dr. Debra Dagwan has been a League member for four years and has served on the LWVCCA Legislative Committee and Nomination Committee for the last two years. She is an educator, advocate, and activist with a Master’s Degree in Education, in Health Science and School Administration from Boston University, and a Ph.D. in Teaching Administration. As an advocate for civil rights, racial justice, equality for women, individuals with disabilities, and LGBTQIA+ rights on Cape Cod, she has worked for many years with numerous community organizations.
In her professional career she taught health awareness including nutrition, first aid health, communicable and non-communicable disease, and substance use for 17 years at Falmouth High School. Debra has also worked for many years in the Cape Cod community as an outreach worker for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and assisted those who are homeless and/or experiencing housing challenges to access health services.
Debra was the first black woman elected President of the Barnstable Town Council. She served on the council for 12 years, and on the Barnstable School Committee for 6 years and was Vice Chair. She also served as a member of the Greater Hyannis Civic Association for over 30 years, and the board of directors for the Cape Cod branch of the NAACP. She is currently a member of the LWV Cape Cod Area, Barnstable No Place for Hate, and she initiated the concept of the Zion Heritage Museum. Now retired, Debra continues her advocacy work in many areas and was appointed to AmplifyPOC Cape Cod board of directors.
