During her 21 years as a League of Women Voters, Newton member, she has been on the Board for 6 years and president for 3 years. She has brought more relevant programming to its League Presents local access show and a substantial knowledge of government and affordable housing. She increased the League’s visibility and influence by creating stronger relationships with elected leaders, city department heads and other civic organizations. As President, she established a Marketing & Communication team leading to the city having an increased knowledge of the League and its programs and advocacy. She implemented a strategic & tactical planning process and is undertaking multiple process improvement efforts. In 2019 she received the League’s Jane Leighton Award.
As a Newton City Councilor (2000 – 2016), she implemented an outcome-based budget review process; introduced competency-based hiring when selecting a new City Clerk; ensured that a non-profit transitional home was able to locate in a residential area; and took a leadership role in creating and updating zoning ordinances enabling more affordable housing to be built. She received the Massachusetts Commission on the Status of Women’s Unsung Heroines of Massachusetts Award (2016).
During her tenure as the VP of the John M. Barry Boys & Girls Club Board, she drove the funding and implementation of its first community-wide needs assessment which improved their strategic and tactical planning process and outcome. Currently she serves in a leadership position for two affordable housing non-profits: U-CHAN and CAN-DO. In her spare time, Marcia enjoys being a member of Pathway to Possible’s Best Buddy Program.
